Waimakariri River in Autumn

After the sky cleared the sun shone, a light breeze ruffled the leaves on the Autumn changing trees. I had a day out with Mum beside the Waimakariri River enjoying the start of a young Autumn.

We talked and ambled, took many photos and had a picnic. There were people walking dogs while some were fishing, Pied Shags were also cruising the water. Mum was enjoying her day out and using her camera again. Thanks Mum, we had a great time!!

South of the river, the way you are looking, is the city of Christchurch, behind you are smaller country settlements. Many people live in the smaller towns and communte to Christchurch for work but since the earthquake of Feburary the smaller towns have become more popular. The Waimakariri River joins the Kaiapoi River out to the east, on the left, and then continues its journey to the Pacific Ocean. Waimakariri in Maori means "river of cold rushing water" - it is a snow fed river. The river is known colloquially in Canterbury as "The Waimak".

The weekend is upon us in kiwi land, the weather is supposed to be good and Hubby will be home - maybe a day out and some more exploring. Have a great weekend all :)
