Friday 22 April 2011: Relating to the kids
This morning in yet another downpour, we all went to the village of Masusato, to examine the possibilities for installing a new pump. Mary made the contact with Rose, her dear friend from her days in SJOG. Rose has recently married the village headman.
We arrived to a warm welcome, as usual, where they even had the chairs out!!
The situation was that a foundation had installed a rope pump/elephant pump two years ago and it keeps breaking down, even when fixed it only last two weeks at most.
Today they were getting their water from a grey, dirty stream.
We don?t touch other people?s pumps so we agreed on a new location where the villagers will begin digging on Monday. As usual we will supply the cement and the pump and the villagers will locate bricks, sand, broken stone and all the labour.
The students have agreed to help.
The picture shows Marc with his new found friend. Marc is on placement, for six weeks, as a module of his course in the School of Computing in DIT. Even though he is a techie through and through, he has an amazing with the village kids, as have all the rest of the gang
