Saturday 23 April 2011: Slurp

A honey bee came inside and found a smear of jam on my kitchen bench. I was surprised at the size of her tongue. A waving antenna has caused a little motion blur on her face,

There have been very few honey bees in my garden this season. I didn't see any until late summer. The cause, I think, is the arrival in our district of the Varroa mite last year. Controlling the mite is too expensive for hobby apiarists. It's sad to lose such a welcome little helper.

I sawed a lot of firewood today and I'm wrecked. I had hoped to do it during the summer, but it took me such a long time to get over the bug that I had in January and it didn't get done. Now winter is nearly upon us so it has to be done.
