Sunday 24 April 2011: Halifax
I have mixed feelings about this blip. We were orienteering in Wheldrake Woods today and the Air Museum is next door. I tried to get an interior blip of the cockpit of a Dakota which seemed to be very constricting and built out of Meccano and made you realise how courageous the pilots were. The fuselage also seemed to be very fragile and must have been a terrifying experiencing for the soldiers travelling in it.
There was a real mix of visitors in this hangar, some enjoying pointing out the visual representation of the bombloads to their friends. Tony's comment was that the Halifax did well to survive so many missions. Hypocriticially I cringe at the 'in your face' desire to record the destruction whilst feeling for the lives of the young men who fought from these planes (many of them only just out of their teens) and accepting the necessary evil of the conflict.
