Tuesday 8 November 2011: Sapele
Today's the day ........................ to make a window
This might look like just any old window to you - but it's actually quite special. It has been made from scratch to exact measurements and will replace a rotten sash window in an old house not far from here.
It was made by joiner son Tim and his workmate Chris from planks of sapele wood. Sapele is a west african hardwood, similar to mahogany in texture and density. The colour is less red/orange and more of a golden brown colour than mahogany, but it can be easily be mistaken for it - a sort of poor man's mahogany.
It's good to think that this new window, made by skilful hands, will give a new lease of life to an old house .........................
