Tuesday 13 December 2011: Lucia Day

Tivoli #6

On St Lucia's day it is traditional for choirs of young girls to dress in white and carry candles after dark. This tradition goes on in most schools and churches all over Denmark today and tonight I was lucky enough to be in Tivoli while they walked round singing Danish Christmas songs (and a couple of English ones too).

This was remarkably difficult as they were very badly lit and kept moving. When they did stop, hundreds of people were jostling for position. Including a pretty, young professional photographer who, when asked politely to move so someone else could get a picture, turned and batted her eyelids and said "I'm working". This went down like a lead balloon with the guy who'd said it and I realised that diplomacy is not every one's forte.
