Friday 16 March 2012: Safe and Sound
I noticed this old vault in the lobby of the Spalding Building where we had an appointment Monday, but I didn't have my camera with me. So when I found myself downtown again today near the same building, I went in to shoot some photos. I think it's fascinating. There are two of them on display. This used to be the Oregon Bank Building.
I've since learned that on one of the floors, they've put more bank vaults to good use as indoor bike parking! The Mosler Safe Company, makers of the vaults, were renowned for manufacturing the vaults for the Federal Reserve at Fort Knox as well as some missile silos.
You can see more photos of the vaults and a few more of my wanderings downtown here. The Portland downtown area is quite photogenic.
