Opening Day with Oskar

Opening Day of boating season (summer!??) today with crew races and a boat parade through the Montlake Cut. It was very special to have our 7 year old grandson Oskar with us!! (the others had other plans- we like one at a time!). I told him how I raced in this race once before he was born - he wasn't impressed. I just couldn't decide on one photo so thought these 2 sort of went together - UNDER the Montlake Bridge where he and Grampa are watching the last race -Oskar has his eye on the UW crew who were about 5 boat lengths ahead - that's Oregon State U in the orange and then Argentina(!) and UVA (U of Virginia)- then OVER the bridge to watch all the crews returning to the UW boathouse- I love this view, with the boats all lined up on a log boom to watch. If it's nice in the morning for us to row we can row by here and the log boom will still be here - but it might be a good idea to go the other direction :-)
Then there was a parade of all kinds of boats, new, old, funky, decorated - but the best part for us was the fireboats squirting water all over.
We also got to watch on TV the Mexican jockey (on Cinco de Mayo!) win the Kentucky Derby horse race with our daughter-in-law (Oskar's Mom) and her insights as a "horse person".
AND, as you can see the sun came out and it was a beautiful day! What could be better?
