Friday 18 May 2012: GATESHEAD INTERCHANGE
The Interchange at Gateshead is for local bus and coach services as well as Metro services. This large-scale sculpture "Changing Lines" by Danny Lane was unveiled in March 2004.
The cranes in the background are on a building site where rebuilding is taking place. A lot of old shops and the " Get Carter " car park were demolished and the area is being regenerated. Planned are new shops including a large Tesco, cafes, bars and restaurants, student accomodation and a hotel. The work is due to be finished by the end of 2013. At the moment Gateshead is in a bit of a sorry state with lots of empty shops but the future looks brighter.
It rained again today so I wasn't out for long. Hope it will be dry tomorrow as I'm off on another day trip by coach. The trip includes a journey on the Settle to Carlisle Railway.
