India Joe -- A Santa Cruz Institution

The fog obligingly lifted for a few hours this afternoon, making for a lovely time at the Avant Garden Party, the annual fundraising celebration sponsored by New Music Works. Volunteer guest chef at this event for 32 years has been Jozeph Schultz, local chef extraordinaire and founder of the legendary India Joze restaurant. Joe has an efficient portable kitchen with enough space for him to wield several very large woks at once; he kept a steady stream of food going for a good three hours straight. The party was held in a lush private garden big enough for two stages which featured performances by a harpist, a marimba ensemble, a flute and guitar duo, and the traditional Moroccan Berber group, Aza. Good food, interesting music, a lovely setting--a very fine Sunday afternoon.
