Here the view is from the Isle of May across the choppy sunlit sea towards East Lothian with the volcanic Bass Rock and North Berwick Law and also the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh in the distance.
High seas had prevented the boat from landing during the last 5 days so we were very fortunate to be able to sail to the island today.  Huge waves still broke on the boat on the journey across so it was a relief to land and then wander around on the Nature Reserve which until very recently had been home to thousands of breeding sea birds.  Only a few remained as most had left on their long journeys to their winter habitats but soon the island shores will be covered with about 2000 new born seals.  I think the post on the side of the photo is a remote camera to monitor the birds and seals.
As part of Open Doors Day some of the buildings were open so we were able to go into a foghorn building and to see the machinery which helped to produce the compressed air for the horns and also we went up one of the little light houses. The main lighthouse (built by the famous Stevensons in 1816) is being converted to solar power so was out of bounds but it was possible to go into the remains of the first lighthouse built in Scotland in 1636.  The top two stories had been demolished as they obscured the light of the main lighthouse.
