A stranger no more

My bird book tells me that the Tauhou (Silvereye) was first recorded in New Zealand in 1832, with many more arriving in 1856. The Maori name reflects its relatively recent arrival from the east coast of northern Australia; tauhou means "stranger".

These birds are now widespread and well established in New Zealand and the off shore islands. I can remember having them pointed out to me when I was a boy, and subsequently paying them no attention until the last few years. Now I am well able to spot them, and every now and then get a nice clear photo like this one.
