Saturday 11 August 2012: Juggler
Spent most of the day doing nothing at all, which was excellent, then went out mid afternoon to catch some random Fringeyness via the half-price hut.
Bit blurry this shot, but somehow I like it.
Fringe show #26: Complex: Electra
This was a play based on the Electra complex. A decent performance from Electra, who came across as gauche and a bit confused which made the whole thing feel extremely awkward (but in a good way). Electra's brother was also good, very creepy. I liked it enough, but I was disappointed that it only lasted about 40 mins.
Fringe show #27: Kabarett: Alternative Variety
This was a free variety cabaret showcasing some of the stuff showing at Voodoo Rooms and beyond. Not a great start imo, as the first act was introduced as being an escapee from a mental asylum who we shouldn't look in the eye. It was strange actually, as the act didn't mock the mentally ill so it could have easily done without the unnecessarily stigmatising intro. Overall though, an excellent show and well worth a look. Highlights were a very slick showman of a juggler which was more like physical theatre than juggling, and a steampunk band. Also included some improv, burlesque and singing. I believe it changes every time.
Fringe show #28: Lady Rizo
I'm going to give this my first five star rating (gasp). I thought it was excellent, standing ovation from me (gasp again) as I'm not sure how it could have been better. Lady Rizo sings a variety of her own and other people's songs, and she sings them extremely well. Tremendous voice, what a belter, and so so funny too. Her audience interaction is extremely well judged coming across as charmingly flirty, saucy and at times silly. Loved it, it went by in a flash. Very classy cabaret.
