Naked Ladies!

Or Colchicum autumnale (autumn crocus) if you prefer. They are proper crocuses, but come up in the autumn instead of the spring, the flowers don't appear until the leaves have long gone. Seeing as they are springing up all over the place, I'm taking it that we are officially now into autumn.

Managed to get the grass cut today. It would be nice to think it would be the last mowing of the year, but I doubt it! Picked some peas and cabbage from the garden for dinner tonight. Elsewhere in the garden, the Florence (bulb) fennel is bulking up nicely and the leaks are looks good too, but we're going to have to wait a bit for the celariac. Quite a few of the red onions have got thick necks, but the ordinary ones seem to have done okay.

We don't grow tatties, the garden just isn't big enough, it would take all of it to get a decent crop! Luckily we have a friend who grows several varieties, and always has a surplus. At the moment we are eating some Shetland Blacks that she's given us. They are amazing - dark purple to black skins, with white/yellowy floury flesh and a purple line round them on the inside. Very tasty! Going round for supper and scrabble with her tomorrow night, so we'll see what other delights she has for us!
