The Arnside Bore

Today's the day .......................... to catch a wave

Thanks to detailed predictions and instruction from Arnside and beyond, we had another try this morning to catch sight of the Arnside Bore.  And I'm delighted to report that we did see it - and it was every bit as exciting as I hoped it might be.

We were standing on the little jetty at Arnside and at that point there were large mud banks between the channels of water.  The first thing, I suppose I didn't realise, was what a noise it would make.  You could hear it coming almost before we could really make out that frothy, foaming line of water across the estuary which was heading towards us.

And when it arrived, travelling at a faster-than-running pace, it wasn't so much a wave - more a huge wall of water that immediately filled up all the space open to it with much swirling and eddying.  It would have been a terrifying sight to see if you were somewhere in its path without any means of escape - but we had the perfect spot to view it from the pier.

And just to make things quite perfect, we found ourselves in the company of that intrepid blipper, Mr Knottman, and his lovely wife, Mrs K.  I sneaked the extra shot of him before he realised we were there.  You can see his comprehensive coverage of today's events here .........................
