Burrell Collection

Today we went to see the Burrell Collection. We have been here before but it was at least a year ago, maybe more. The cafe here is not up to the standard of yesterday, but I guess that it not the only reason to visit.

The photograph shows a view of the atrium of the building. The large bowl was originally housed in Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli near Rome. I imagine countries did not protect their heritage as well as they do today, otherwise this object would still be in Tivoli.

The collection is massive to have been the property of one man. I have the feeling it is somewhat unfocussed, and that he was obsessed with collecting. From the information given in the museum he did not even have the space to view and be able to see all the items he collected.

It is well worth a visit, and he did give his collection to Glasgow rather than letting it be dispersed around the world, still I can't help feeling some disapproval of either Burrell or his motives.
