Kilfinan Church

Wednesday 15th

It has been a glorious day.
The sun was shining when I pulled back the bedroom curtains this morning and all day we've had bright sunshine and lovely blue skies.
This morning we took the car round to Kilfinan to visit the lovely old church there and it's graveyard where some of my ancestors are buried. There is a group called the Friends of Kilfinan who have mapped out the church graveyard and where possible have made a record of the headstones and any inscriptions.
The gravestones that I wanted to visit were those of my great great grandfather John Cameron who died in 1858 at the age of 31 and the gravestone that my great uncle Archibald Cameron and his wife Catherine McKellar ( like lots of highland women her own maiden surname is given as it's this name that would be put on her gravestone ) had erected in memory of their children Robert ( 3mths in 1884) Jessie ( 8yrs in 1885) and Donald (13 yrs in 1894)
I'm happy to say that despite the deaths of these children Walter and Catherine went on to have five other children who lived into adulthood and Walter died in 1926 in Rothesay at the age of 76 and Catherine died in 1942 in Rothesay at the age of 91.
We then went inside the church to sign the visitor's book where we noticed an entry from some people from Australia who had visited the church recently on the trail of ancestors, they themselves were descendants of Cameron's from this area. I've taken a note of their addresses for when I get home as I would like to follow up this lead.
After visiting the church we drove back to Tighnabruaich to have lunch and then we had a long walk down past the boatyard, being treated to glorious views of the Kyles and Arran, who's high peaks still had a dusting of snow.
This afternoon has been spent sitting in the garden of the cottage reading our books and enjoying the sunny weather and just relaxing.
This evening we are going out for dinner either to the Royal Hotel or to the Wellpark we haven't decided yet .
