Sally Mair - Loving life

Not what I thought

This bag was hanging on the back of the bathroom door in my friend's house. I immediately recognised it as Louisa May Alcott and assumed it was of Jo in Little Women. I was correct in the author but incorrect in my source. Apparently it came from a book called Work:A Story of Experience. Strange how recognisable it was to her style and viewpoint.
The funeral went well today. It was a very particular funeral (In St Andrews Kelso you'll be interested to hear Blethers). Clearly put together with great thought by his parents who have a very strong faith. Their lives will be devastated. Losing any child is hard, but in their cases they had spent 26 years supporting him, (sadly fighting for his rights at times too as he had extremely complex needs, physical, intellectual and health as well as being cortically blind) searching out appropriate education and later services for him as a young adult. They gave him such a rich life while they could.
Once he left school, their house was extended to provide him with his own accommodation with room for him and his carers. Now they have a huge house with just two of them in it and a removal of the focus for their energies.
We heard, during the funeral, Matthew using his switch to interact (he couldn't speak) , there was a montage of images throughout his life. He played the angel in the church nativity play at Christmas, so there were pictures of him in church doing that. The music and poems were very personal many written by family members. I think those who didn't know him well will have a better understanding of just how much a child with complex needs can do and may well have been taken aback to some degree. It was just right for him though.
The funeral moved to the beautiful cemetery below the hills in Melrose where he was buried.
