Distinction

It's been another long and difficult day at work, the story of which I don't feel any need to record. Some days are just best forgotten.

I'm turning my blip over to my sons today. For them, it's been a week to celebrate. First, Roam (on the left) found out that he got a full set of distinctions in his BTEC National Diploma in Media Production, more than sufficient to guarantee his place at the University of Westminster to study for a degree in Television Production. He got confirmation of his student accommodation tonight, on campus and very luxurious. He's all set and full of enthusiasm. A whole world of opportunity lies at his feet.

Secondly, Forrest got an exceptionally high grade (equivalent to a strong first) for his Sports Writing Module, the one in which he really wanted to do well. He was delighted to be carrying that into the third year of his degree course in Sports Journalism, where he will now be able to focus more on the subjects that most interest him. It's given him a real boost this week.

Neither of my sons excel at academic stuff, but when it comes to the more creative side of their studies, provided they care about the subject matter involved, they do great work. Despite under-performing at school I've never had too many worries about them. They are capable of delivering when it matters, or at least when it matters to them. It's been frustrating at times to witness as a parent, but I've always had a sneaky admiration for their judgement in being able to weigh up just the minimum amount of effort required to get through each stage.

So lads, respect to you both. You've made me a very proud dad this week.
