Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2024 Monday — Hoovering

I attend a Monday morning women’s breakfast Bible study. I participate every week. I signed-up because it included breakfast. Really! I’m getting a lot more than delicious food.

“Women of the New Testament” is the focus of the study; every Monday as the women use their “mining tools” to dig for the deeper content contained in the Scripture, we have a meaningful time.

Our study this week was of Martha, Lazarus's sister. One of the questions was to analyze Martha's change in behavior from the time Jesus was visiting in the home of Lazaus, Martha, and Mary (Luke 10:40), to the later visit when Jesus came to their house because their brother Lazarus had died (John 11:28). During the first visit, Martha got upset because Mary was sitting and listening to Jesus and Martha wanted Mary to help with preparations and getting their house ready. The next recorded visit Martha is anxious to help her sister Mary spend time with Jesus. I think Martha had come to realize that "hoovering" the house was not nearly as important as enjoying a meal while it's hot on the table. Nobody in her right mind is going to "hoover" the house when they realize a warm meal with fresh baked bread is on the table. I think that Martha had come to fully understand that Jesus is the “Bread of Life." What do you think caused Martha’s change of attitude?

Jesus’s respect for women and the value He has for them is so very affirming and is so very obvious as we study the women of the New Testament. I find it extremely sad that so many people want to claim that Christianity belittles women; they should look deeper, Jesus honors women. The modern translations of the Bible are not difficult to understand, but too many people are not willing to read them. So many people want to find themselves in Heaven when they die, but most do not want to be Christ followers on earth; that lacks logic. Jesus invites everyone to the meal. Will you be there?
