Today's the day .......................... for a character profile

I'm sorry to say that - in my opinion - collared doves are pretty thick.

They are not at all wary of human beings - or anything else for that matter - and they typically build their nests in trees close to human habitation wherever food resources are abundant. We have friends who have a small pear tree in their garden in which there was a collared dove nest at eye-level - a couple of feet from their back door.

You often find them feeding on bird tables - or more likely pecking about on the ground beneath, where the seeds have fallen. They are easy prey for all the local cats who don't even have to sneak up to them because the doves seem to be quite oblivious to the danger they are in.

In fact, it's a wonder that they haven't been wiped out as a species long ago .....................
