Lake Dunstan

Home to Dunedin today.

Coffee with family before getting on the road for home. A stop in Cromwell for lunch and a breath of fresh air then onto Roxburgh where we stopped for a basket of mixed stone fruits and cherries and a fresh fruit icecream... mmmmm very yummy.

Picked up the canine from his weekend holiday residence - very pleased to see us - and then finally in the front door of home in time for Mother to sink into her armchair and watch the 6 o'clock news.

Lovely trip and good to have a break for our usual routine.

Lake Dunstan is a man-made lake formed when the mighty Clutha River was dammed for electricity. This portion of the lake was where once the silty Kawarau River flowed. Much of the old Cromwell town that I knew as a child is flooded but some of the old buildings were saved and an old Cromwell precinct created for tourism and preservation. My maternal grandfather was one of many "voices" that bellowed loud and loudly against the Dam. 'Damn the Dam' was the catch cry and the fight was long and hard and to no avail.

The hills in the background support some well known vineyards - Mt. Difficulty producing my favourite pinot gris wine.
