Soutra Windfarm

It seems the sheep grazing underneath the windfarm at Soutra Aisle have become used to the noise more than we humans have become used to this blight on the landscape.
It may not be the largest wind farm in the land, but it dominates both sides of the A68 on the road to the Borders and is hardly a welcoming sight as tourists come north.

We were on our way for lunch with friends in Kelso, leaving an Edinburgh struggling to allow the sun to shine through the haze, to the Borders swathed in sunshine, the fields rolling into the distance, harvest golden with the straw bales like huge pimples dotted over their surface.

There were, despite the warmth in the sun, unmistakeable signs of autumn: the trees were shedding leaves and turning russet while some of the quicker farmers had ploughed their fields to an an even rich brown tilth ready for winter planting.

But that was for another day as we sat and talked and laughed with these old friends until it was time to drive home through golden late afternoon sunshine.
These are the days that remain in the memory bank for ever.
