Sinking river

The ducks would find it difficult to swim barely 100 metres beyond here because the river disappears underground for much of the year. The River Manifold in Staffordshire Peak District has flowed across moorland, through fields, then through a steep sided valley and past huge caves before disappearing through swallow holes in the porous limestone at Whettonmill. Together with the nearby River Hamps which also disappears underground the Manifold reappears about 6 kilometres away in boil holes at Ilam and is fairly deep and wide.
