Whale season in full swing

In recent Blips I've been able to post pics of Southern Right whales taken along the False Bay coastline, inshore for the annual mating season. Today I didn't have far to go to see them - they are about 200m - 300m away from my front door - they arrived at about 10:00 and are still lolling in the waves as I write just after 5 o'clock.

Giant they may be, but it's incredibly hard to see much - you just wait and wait, hoping one will leap clear of the ocean's surface and crash back amidst sheets of spray.

Alas, today wasn't one of those days :-(

There are three whales idling side-by-side in this picture. A fourth is nearby.
