Goldeneye

Anyone any idea why these ducks are called Goldeneye?

In Perth you can guarantee seeing these beauties on the Tay down by the harbour in winter. They hadn't arrived a couple of weeks ago, but today there was a flock of around 80. In Britain we have a breeding population of around 200 pairs, but the winter influx of birds from Northern Europe raises our population to about 35,000 individuals. They'll be heading back to their breeding grounds in February and March.

Another bird that seems to be at home in Perth is the Waxwing. We drove down to Kinross a month ago to blip these birds only to then discover next day we had a flock in the tree behind our flat. This morning as we looked out and there they were again - obviously there must still be a few berries left in Perth.

Have a look in Large.
