Pyramidal Orchid

Beacon Hill, Hampshire

The first of the back blips. I set off from home mid-morning for the long drive down to Southampton. I stopped at Beacon Hill just off the A34 to stretch my legs, and walk up to the Iron Age hill fort. The light wasn't wonderful for landscapes, so I settled for a flower shot, the first pyramidal orchid I've seen this year. This is not an uncommon species, but it's always a treat to see.

Just before I arrived at the car park, a red kite flew overhead, the first I've seen this year (taking the year list on to 135, I think - will need to check later).

In the evening I went to see my Dad in hospital. He looked remarkably well, all things considered, and in good humour too. He was in a ward for elderly gentlemen, but all the others were in their pyjamas and stretched out in bed. He was sat up in his bedside chair, fully dressed, and keeping in touch with the friends, news and tennis on his Samsung iPad. The man is completely indomitable.
