Lewis Chessmen

after my stint helping out at the local art exhibition this morning (which was a bit bizarre), we went into aberdeen to see the lewis chessmen exhibition at the art gallery. these wee chess guys are so lovely and steeped in mystery as to who made them. they were discovered buried on a beach in 1831 in lewis and taken to edinburgh as their archeological significance emerged. It is thought they were made in norway in the 12th century. it's not so much the history that I was impressed by though, but the way they looked and the work that went into that. they are made from walrus tusk and whale teeth and are a wee bit menacing with their bulbous staring eyes - but so attractive at the same time. the girls had a wee game of chess with some plastic pieces while we looked round then we went to a comic shop for a rummage. good day!
