Portrait Photography Course, Stills, Edinburgh

- Backblip -

A early bus journey through to Edinburgh for a course at Stills. On arrival, I was met by Lady Findhorn and D77. David, thank you for coming along to say hello, it was a pleasure to meet you.

Lady F and I then spent the day learning about formal and informal portraits. We considered the work of several famous photographers, looking at lighting, angles, the messages behind the images etc.

Fortunately for us, there was a lecture in the afternoon at the RSA on the photographic portraits of August Sander. We all headed over to hear a conversation between Keith Hartley from the Gallery of Modern Art and Sander's grandson, Gerd, who had travelled over to hang the exhibition now showing at the Dean Gallery until 10 July.

Once back at Stills, our tutor David Grinly set up a studio space with backdrop and lighting and we all had a go at using the equipment and "sitting" for each other. I now know a bit more about lighting, reflectors, softboxes, brolleys, honeycombs, Rembrandt and Butterfly lighting, and some new hints on Photoshop editing.

Thank you to my sitter here, who gave me permission to post this image. We all had a great day. I would recommend this course if Stills run it again.

Here is Lady Findhorn's entry.
