Saturday 10 March 2012: Shy Spider

I don't know what this small spider is. It was hiding inside the outer layer of leaves in the Viburnum bush, and when I poked the camera into the bush it dashed deeper in. I didn't even get a chance to see its gender. However, apart from the smaller, slimmer abdomen it has several similarities to the native orb web Novaranea. I wonder if it's a male of that species.

Edit: After further research I think it is more likely to be a male white-banded orbweb spider, Zealaranea crassa.

One year ago: my account of my first trip into Christchurch two weeks after the big earthquake. Ignore the photo. I couldn't bring myself to use my camera in the city.
