Apology

Poor birdie, whose little bones and feathers I found in the backyard - I am sorry. I don't think it was one of ours who did this to you (because:
a. they are old and lazy and kind of fat.
b. they would have come to the house and showed you to us)
but I apologise anyway. You should not have found your demise in our garden. I should have been there to protect and/or save you.
I will dig a little hole for your remains so your family does not have to look at what is left of you. And I hope the black-eyed susan which volunteers all over our yard will grow on your resting place.
