Off the beaten track

Last night we ate at the Butcher's Arms in Crosby Ravensworth. I've come across "farmer's portions" before in Cumbrian pubs but, my God, they served us up a lot of food. Despite that, and showing great pluck, we made it out of the shepherd's hut and up to the house for another amazing breakfast before reluctantly packing and setting off back home.

There was a straightforward route back but we spurned that and decided to wend our way down through the backroads of Westmorland. We passed down through Orton to Tebay but instead of getting onto the M6, we favoured the older roads that originally traced the path south through the hills.

At one point we took a wrong turn and ended up here, looking down over the river Lune. Beautiful, isn't it?
