Whoompa Loompa

We skied good snow today despite the ferocious winds of yesterday. Powder had been blown into the gully to the left of Wayne's Shoulder, and that was excellent down to the valley floor. Then the short walk up the other side to the Little Borsat West gave us good skiing down to the Genepy. As it was on the lee side of yesterday's hoolie I guess it was protected.

There have been several avalanches involving skiers in the last two days, but no-one has been hurt. And all over the mountains there are slides of varying sizes. The predictions of unstable conditions with the coming of new snow have been proved correct. Underfoot the snow pack settles with a whoomping sound. 'Did you hear that?' Wayne kept on asking today. On steep slopes that sound can be the sign of an imminent avalanche, but on gentler slopes which can't slide the sound serves as a reminder to be vigilant in more hazardous areas.
