Subtle

He greeted us as we entered the primary school class we were to work in this morning.

Subtle.

I'm not sure this is an accurate portrayal of the effects of smoking. But it is certainly striking.

I have a friend who takes pictures for a charity. The accountants are always trying to get her to send in pictures of starving children, batting away flies. She refuses, and instead sends pictures of families who are getting out of the poverty cycle, smiling, growing, living.

Research suggests people respond more generously to images of what is possible if help is offered, rather than images of the bad consequences of not giving.

Surprising? Hopeful I say.
