Day 2 - Castleton and Mam Tor

Slept soundly again. Cereal for brekkie, up at 10, then out to Hitch n Hike. Walking and waterproof trousers and a stick bought for J, then onwards to Castleton to start our walk to Mam Tor (Mother Hill) via Cave Dale. A pretty, grassy gorge then wonderful views from the top fields (stopping for a sandwich and squash half way) before dipping down ahead of the steep pull to the top of the Tor. Rewarded with views north to Edale and south to Castleton, touched the trig and took more photos.

Carried on a bit further than the suggested walk to climb a bit higher still. Eventually doubled backed, descending back towards Castleton. J was glad for her stick as the path down was muddy and churned by horses and bikes. Made it down to a paved road, our knees enjoying the relief to be on the flat. Back to the car, handing a lost glove we'd found near the Tor into the visitor centre, to change our shoes then across to The Three Roofs cafe for a well deserved pot of tea with Bakewell tart (J) and a cream tea (S). Bought stamps, milk and juice from the village shop before heading back home.

4 hours, 7 1/2 miles.

Lovely hot showers, watched the weather forecast then our for supper at the Samuel Fox Inn gastropub in Bradwell. Pork belly and black pudding terrine, steak and chips, beef bourgignon, chocolate three ways and local beer.

Home for wine and Scrabble: J wins (2-0).
