Settling Down

Three new chicks

Today our broody hen now has three new little chicks. Three out of six isn't so bad, is it? We have already had to take one of the eggs out as it obviously wasn't fertilised. We shall let her sit for another day on the other two, just in case they are late runners!

I shall be putting some pictures up another day of the little loves. Today I thought you might be interested to see the shells after the chicks have worked so hard to get out.

It always amazes me that when we take the shells out, that one piece is inside the other. I think you can see it quite clearly on this picture. The day before they actually leave the shell, if you tap the egg, the chick will cheep, cheep inside. It is a fantastic thing to hear.

Their little beak then breaks through in one place and they continue breaking through in a circle on the shell.

It is the most wonderful sight to see a little chick just emerge from the shell, they are still a little wet, but totally exhausted. They can live for 24 hours without food, but we shall have water and chick crumbs there in the morning for them.
