Yesterday's toys

I was visiting friends in Crail, Fife today.
They have a beautiful house built 1830 and had some lovely things there.
On one wall there were these girds (Scots for hoops) and cleeks (Scots for hooks)
These were a very popular toy in the late 19th century - made of iron and children would hit the top of the gird with the cleek and try to keep it going for as long as possible.
I suppose this would be quite difficult on uneven surfaces but so much more fun than x-box?
