Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The Mission

The locality of Auchmacoy lies about 4 miles north-west of Newburgh, close to where the Burn of Auchmacoy meets the River Ythan. It comprises an estate with a mill, landscaped policies, doocot and a mansion house built in the 1830s by the Buchans, a family associated with the area since the early 14th Century.

Just across the road from the estate policies, at Denhead, there is a rather incongruous mission hall and associated house built in 1891 in the Gothic style. The hall is rectangular with a porch and three-light windows and is harled with strong red sandstone dressings. The house has mock-Tudor half-timbering at first-floor level. The Hall and House were built by the Buchan sisters, presumably as a community hall for the estate workers and for Logie Buchan church which lies close by across the river Ythan.

The architecture is quite out of character for the NE of Scotland and a good example of the flamboyance of the wealthy Lairds of Victorian times.
