Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Make that a regular flat white please.

Newburgh on Ythan is the home of Oceanlab, a world leading laboratory involved in experimental and observational work in the deep oceans across the world.

They build devices known as landers which can carry a variety of cameras and instruments 6000 metres down into the ocean. The pressures at these depths are extremely high and present serious engineering challenges. Today's blip gives some idea of what these pressures mean. This once large styrofoam coffee cup was sent down to a mere depth of 2000 metres in the NE Atlantic where the pressure is 200 atmospheres or 2930 pounds per square inch. The silver thimble is for scale, to show how the polystyrene has been thoroughly flattened and deflated by the experience.

As always, Youtube has a video of something similar.
