Bricks and stripes

On the campus, Spence buildings use a lot of local red brick and concrete. The concrete is formed using craft approach which places a plank of wood supporting as it sets.

This gives a distinctive look - up close you can see the impression of the grain left of the individual planks and from further away you have a striped look to the stark white concrete finish.

As the late evening sun slants in from the west across this south facing wall (just a few yards away from the arches of a previous blip) the stripes are picked out and the bricks give off a warm glow.

This particular image is course is chosen to echo the US flag. I stumbled across the idea simply trying to capture the texture of the surfaces.

I like the fact it (for me) also echoes the modernist American painter Jasper Johns who produced an
all white US flag that relies on texture alone.
