Portrait of an elderly man

I met this gentleman this morning outside his house on Mustafa Subhi Street. Using sign language, he told me that his family had lived here since the early years of the 20th Century. His father's life is celebrated by a plaque outside. He was killed in 1919, during the brief spell of independence Azerbaijan enjoyed between the end of Tzarist rule and the coming of Communism in 1920.
