Mother and child reunion

The old man is in his 90th year and has not seen the painting before except in reproduction.

His mother, Phyllis Vipond-Crocker, the dark-haired girl in the picture, was the same age as the century when she modelled for the work in 1917. She died in 1938.

The painting is The Cornish Coast by Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) who was later honoured for her work as  war artist at the Nuremberg Trials.

The place is the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. We broke our journey from London to West Wales so as to achieve this 'reunion'. It will remain in our memories as a very special moment.
