Ghost in the Machine...........

Stopped at a B.P garage this morning to refuel when this amazing car appeared alongside. It was a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost built in 1911!! 1911, the car was 100yrs old!!

I am not a cars man, but I was blown away by the engineering on this car, which has stood up to the test of time. Forgot to leave my camera in the car, so had to use my HTC Phone Camera, but I think it did o.k? I discovered some facts below about the famous flying lady that you may not be aware of......

The Flying Lady

The Spirit of Ecstasy has adorned the radiators of Rolls-Royce motor cars since 1911. The mascot was modeled after a young woman, Eleanor Thornton had an affair with Lord Montagu of Beaulieu who commissioned the Rolls-Royce figurine.

Tragedy Kills Eleanor

During the First World War, Montagu was dispatched to India with the Army, to oversee the effectiveness of motorised units. He and Eleanor were travelling aboard the SS Persia on December 13 1915 when it was hit by a German torpedo in the Mediterranean. Although Montagu survived, by clinging to an upturned life boat for 36 hours, Eleanor went down with the ship. Her body was never recovered.
