Bag the Bruck

'Bruck' is an Orcadian word meaning rubbish, trash. There is an annual clean-up day when volunteers clear bruck from the beaches here. There isn't that much compared to many places down south, though the shores that are harder to reach do get a lot of old fishing nets, ropes and lobster gear washing up on them.

Today I helped out at Waulkmill Bay. It didn't seem so bad but we took about 15 bags off...once you dig into the seweed you find rope etc. I also cleared out pools in the salt-marsh behind the shore. We weren't very lucky with the weather; it was rainy with a chill wind.

The area here is an RSPB reserve and the photo is one of the staff quad-biking some of the bags up to the road where the council will pick it up.

I walk and enjoy the coast so much and it is nice to do more than just photograph it.
