Morning Merit

Most mornings, if you're out early enough, you can find a line of people ready to give rice, drinks, snacks, and other food of all sorts--soup, seasoned meat, porridge, eggs, vegetables, fruit, etc--packaged in small bags to the monks passing by. The trick is to portion the food correctly so that you don't run out before all the monks have passed by but you don't want too much left over either. After each person has given their portions, the monks chant a blessing in Bali. Then they pour their donations into a cart that a man is pushing behind them (because otherwise the bowls they hold to receive the donations wouldn't be able to hold the next group's food.) From there, they walk in a silent line to the next row of people on the next block.

I was just an on looker, but my friend said if we had extra food left over and couldn't find any more monks to give it to, we could eat it for breakfast.
