The Eye of Sauron

Actually, this is really the South Lodge of Keith Hall beside the ubiquitous B993 on the outskirts of Inverurie. (Rounding a sharp bend as you head into town from Keithhall Village and Whiterashes, it suddenly appears on the right just before the pillbox by the bridge over the Ury near where the Ury flows into the Don.)

It's that peculiar round tower with the tiny windows near the top that make me think of Barad-dûr from Tolkein's epic Lord of the Rings - albeit on a more domestic scale than that envisaged by filmmaker Peter Jackson (or by Tolkein himself for that matter).

Still, driving into Inverurie along this stretch of the B993 - especially towards nightfall - I invariably imagine an unseen, malevolent eye tracking my movements from behind those peculiar top-floor windows...

The feeling of doom was quite palpable this evening as I took this photo: my life was quite literally in imminent danger - from the speeding rush hour traffic in and out of town as it whizzed around the sharp corners on this busy road.
