Life in Pong Land

Trainer

This little beauty is a "trainer". It is by the side of the road at RAF Langham in Norfolk and was built in 1943.

It was used to train aircraft gunners to shoot accurately, a film of enemy warplanes was projected on the walls inside the dome and the trainee gunner would shoot at them with a dummy gun that fired lights.

Once the trainee proved himself he could then be let loose with live ammo.

There were 40 built and this is one of only 6 left.

Not quite the same as a modern day simulator, but pretty impressive for the technology at the time.
