Too old to die young

Slave quarters, Frogmore Louisiana

This is Frogmore Louisiana. A modern cotton plantation with a long history. It's depressing stuff going round the pre civil war slave houses. By all accounts this was not the worse place to live but it all seemed pretty awful to me. The cabins were lifted off the ground because half the year they were flooded, no glass in the windows, no screens, loads of bugs. Apart from the rope bed there was not much other furniture in this place. I know this was a museum but I don't think it was too far from reality. This might have been acceptable for settlers who had chosen to live here but having been taken from your country, living in a totally alien environment seems pretty miserable.
However, the history of cotton and the influence it has had on the development of this area is very interesting indeed and it was really good seeing the old steam cotton gins. The modern, computer controlled ones with their fantastic output are very impressive.
We also came past Ferriday, the birthplace of Jerry Lee Lewis. The simple cabin where he was born is already a weird shrine and he's not even dead yet! Locals have set up a really interesting, one room museum in an old post office dedicated to him and other Delta musicians. If you're ever in this area it's well worth a visit.
