Cannon at Fort Donelson, Tennessee. The Battle of Fort Donelson was a key battle in the Civil War. Fought between February 11 - 16, 1862, this victory for the North allowed the Union to capture Nashville and control much of Middle and West Tennessee, as well as southern Kentucky. It also made a hero out of General Grant and earned him the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant.
