Meanderings Through Life

In the crucible furnace at Abbeydale

So many pictures again today, in a wonderful location which lends itself to black and white imagery: all those shapes and textures.

This place is Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet in Sheffield, virtually untouched since the 1700s. It is home to the the only original crucible furnace left in the world. The place specialised in making scythes.

This photo was taken at the bottom of the crucible furnaces where the fires were stoked (the crucibles were lowered in from the floor above). My daughter is looking out the pile of crucibles outside.

An amazing place.
